I have recently watched
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Criterion Collection (2-Disc Special Edition). I am a big Bill Murry fan.
Scrooged has been one of my favorite movies for some time.
Lost in Translation really seemed to be a transcendent role for Murray. The Life shows Murray inhabiting a character much more like the character played in
Scrooged. But despite this the movie has unexpected pathos.
It was advertised as a
comedy, a
parody of the Jacques Cousteau documentaries. But this is just the premise for a much more serious exploration of aging, and relationships. In many ways The Life is a worthy mate for Lost in Translation. If anything Murray provides a braver and richer exploration of the liquid realities of an aging movie star.
